I use a bar clamp and CDX plywood discs with a center hole and a hole drilled through the bench top to glue and clamp the rings together.  If there are too many rings to easily glue at once, then I glue them in sections.

Once the bowl is glued up entirely
I cut a recessed flanged pocket on the bottom.  I use a template that is secured with double-sided carpet tape to hold the template in place and then I use a router with a straight bit to clean out the center area,  It is then followed by a  dovetail bit to finish the outside edge of the pocket.  This pocket is then chucked with a expanding chuck and placed on the lathe for turing.

Now the bowl is ready for turning
